Artwork Description

Asian Koel (Female) From What Still Sings (Thailand / Baja, 2025) Graphite and ash on paper, 100 × 80 cm The female Asian Koel, with her mottled camouflage and patient stillness, embodies endurance within chaos. Rendered in graphite and ash, remnants of the same fires darkening migratory skies, she becomes an emblem of unseen resilience. The technique carries echoes of Baja’s burned mangroves and shifting coastal light, where I’ve witnessed how ecosystems absorb trauma yet continue to call. In both places, song survives smoke. This drawing asks what frequencies persist when so much is lost, what still sings across the distances that bind Asia’s monsoons to Baja’s winds.
